Law enforcement in Guyana has recorded 4,176 traffic-related offenses during a one-week period from December 8-15, 2024.

Speeding emerged as the most prevalent violation, with 739 cases detected. Tinted glass violations followed closely, with 637 incidents primarily involving front windshields.

Other notable infractions included failure to wear seat belts (204 cases), safety helmet violations (158 cases), and driving under the influence (21 cases).

Traffic Chief Senior Superintendent Mahendra Singh specifically noted 244 speeding tickets were issued along the Heroes Highway during the December 8-14 period. Motorcycle safety was a particular concern, with 158 citations issued for riders and passengers not wearing safety helmets.

The traffic enforcement exercise targeted multiple other safety concerns, including:

  • Faulty vehicle load packing (29 cases)
  • Unlighted vehicles (front and rear lighting violations totalling 105 cases)
  • Drunk driving
