JENNINGS, La. (KPLC) – A SWLA teen has a long road to recovery ahead of him after a motorcycle crash, but if it weren’t for his quick decision-making at the scene, it could have been much worse.

Seventeen-year-old Cayden Timmons was driving his motorcycle to school on a foggy Tuesday morning.

Timmons was going straight down La. 26 when he was in an accident with a pickup truck in the dense fog.

“It’s just really hard as a mom, to see, or any parent, to see your child in a bed and there’s not anything you can do to take away their pain or to help them feel any better, and more often than it should motorcycles are getting in accidents because people are not paying attention,” said his mother, Tabitha Vincent.

Timmons’ decision-making and awareness may have saved his life.

Knowing he would get hit, he laid down with his bike instead of hitting the truck head-on.

“Thankfully for his quick reaction to it, he’s still with us today. Yes he has a long way in recovery ahead, but that’s minimal to still be able to say that he survived a motorcycle accident, especially at only 17 years of age and not being, you know, a lifelong rider or very seasoned, it really goes to show a lot,” his aunt Maigen Lynn Graff said.

Wearing a helmet is required by law for all motorcycle riders in Louisiana.

Timmons’ helmet likely prevented any skull damage, but he remains hospitalized with a broken leg, shattered pelvis, broken shoulder, and a lacerated liver and spleen.

“Definitely hasn’t scared him or anything, and he looks forward to getting back on the road in the community and stuff like that and showing support to everyone that’s pulled through for him, and prayed for him, and donated, and volunteered to help with home renovations and just anything and everything,” Graff said.

While Timmons is expected to recover, there’s still a long road ahead.

He’s already undergone two surgeries and a third is scheduled. for the next three months, he will not be able to walk and won’t finish the school year at Hathaway High School.

His family is renovating their home for when he gets out of the hospital.

To help motorcyclists make the right decisions, Louisiana State Police Officers motorcycle safety courses.
