JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – The Blessing of the Bikes returned to Jackson on Sunday for its 16th year, drawing motorcycle riders to the Capital City for what organizers call the unofficial start of riding season.
Event coordinator Sirena Wilson said the gathering keeps her community together.
“Unfortunately, yesterday there were a couple motorcycle accidents. Some were fatalities and we don’t want that to happen. We want everybody to come out to ride safe and enjoy, you know, the rest of this year,” Wilson said.
Stronger Hope Baptist Church hosted riders in its parking lot, which one pastor described as a “prayer meeting on wheels.”
“I don’t believe that anybody, anywhere in the world, should get on a motorcycle without prayer. Prayer is the key. Prayer is simply the key to keep us safe on these motorcycles,” said Pastor Ronald K. Moore.
Organizers said education is also a priority for riders. Donald Young, owner of Southern Mississippi Motorcycle Training, urged all riders to complete a formal safety course and obtain the proper licensing.
“I strongly encourage all bikers, whether you’re riding or not, to take a motorcycle safety course… you’ve got to have an endorsement on your license in order to be legal. It’s just very important that you don’t go out there and try to train yourself,” Young said.
Riders closed the event with a message for all motorists sharing the road: “Look twice, save a life,” Wilson said.
