Clearfield- The Clearfield County Commissioners agreed to allow the county to be a pass-through for a grant to upgrade the livestock facilities at the Clearfield County Fairgrounds to an Agricultural Hub and Multi-purpose Training Center.
The Community Project Funding grant is coming through Rep. Glenn “GT” Thompson’s office and is part of several funding sources being sought for the project.
An article published by Gant News in November noted that the current facilities are deteriorating and there have been efforts to upgrade the facilities but finding funding has been an issue.
Mike Kerr of the Fair and Park Board has been leading fundraising efforts to construct a new indoor facility which would house animals during fair week and also feature a show ring, and throughout the rest of the year could be used for other agricultural events and also be used as a multi-purpose center for the community.
According to the previous article the building would be located near the Expo II building and the current barns would be razed with the Fair and Park Board deciding what to do with the space later.
At that meeting the commissioners had agreed to be the pass through for grant funding and at Tuesday’s meeting they were informed that this latest funding request application was about to be submitted for approximately $1 million.
The total cost of the project is about $3 million.
The commissioners also had two proclamations, the first to name May as National Foster Care Month with the proclamations noting that children need a safe and nurturing environment and that every 150 seconds a child enters foster care.
Currently there are about 14,000 children in foster care in Pennsylvania and there is a desperate need for foster families.
The second proclamation names May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month with the proclamation noting there are 838,000 motorcyclists in Pennsylvania and motorists are asked to practice safe driving techniques and be vigilant.
Chairman Tim Winters noted an event for Motorcycle Safety Awareness will be held on the courthouse steps May 10.
The commissioners also announced that the ballots have been printed and absentee ballots will be mailed soon.
Registration for the May election closes May 5 and all residents are encouraged to get out and vote.
