Traffic safety instructor Andrew Smith has a mission when he visits Redstone Arsenal from Fort Novosel each year.

He teaches motorcycle survival skills.

Smith, a RiderCoach for the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, taught four students Oct. 23 in the basic rider course at Redstone. An advanced rider course was scheduled Oct. 24.

“Motorcycle Safety Foundation is to teach basic and advanced riding skills to promote lifelong riders,” Smith said.

The basic rider course students included Capt. Jeremiah Graham, Lt. Col. Sterling Montgomery, Capt. Alex Winfield and National Guard Spc. DeAngelo Williams.

The Army Progressive Motorcycle Program is mandatory for Soldiers operating a privately-owned motorcycle to sustain or enrich rider skills, according to the Garrison Safety Office. The Army standard Basic Rider’s Course is an appropriate Motorcycle Safety Foundation, state-approved or Department of Defense component approved curriculum for motorcycle operators’ safety training.

Training will be conducted by certified or licensed motorcycle rider coaches and include classroom instruction on technical and behavioral subjects, hands-on training, and an evaluation on riding skills and knowledge. Installations will accept the completion cards of any MSF, MSF-based, state-approved or DOD component approved course that includes written and riding evaluations as proof of successful completion of the required training.

Redstone Arsenal has concluded Motorcycle Safety Training for fiscal year 2024. The next class will be held in April to kick off Motorcycle Safety Month in May. Register for classes at airs.safety.army.mil. For more information, call the Garrison Safety Office at 256-876-3383.
