Warm weather has brought motorcycles out of their winter’s nap. Drivers need to remember to be extra careful around them on the road.

HARTFORD, Conn. — As warmer weather brings more motorcyclists to Connecticut’s roads, state police are urging drivers to be more mindful and share the road safely.

Bob Manley, a former motorcyclist from the area, said he gave up riding due to safety concerns.

“I don’t want to take the risk on the road nowadays with a lot of these people on their cell phones,” Manley said.

Manley is not alone in his concern. Motorcycle riders say they enjoy the open road, but they’re increasingly worried about distracted and reckless drivers.

Connecticut State Police Sgt. Luke Davis said drivers of passenger vehicles need to stay alert, especially with more motorcycles on the roads during spring and summer.

“They’re not as visible as four-wheeled vehicles,” Davis said. “We do ask that people driving passenger vehicles be mindful of their surroundings.”

Davis also emphasized the importance of safety gear for motorcyclists, encouraging them to wear helmets, jackets, gloves and protective pants to reduce the risk of serious injury in the event of a crash.

“Wearing protective gear can help if you end up getting ejected from the motorcycle,” he said.

Motorcyclists have a role in road safety as well, Davis added, by staying aware of their surroundings and riding responsibly.

Law enforcement is monitoring for reckless drivers, but riders like Manley say they still don’t feel safe.

“If they were just a little more conscious on the road, it would be a lot safer out there,” Manley said.

Manley wants drivers to, “Wake up. People are out on a bike — they’ve got a low profile. Just pay attention”

Police urge residents to call 911 and report any incident of reckless driving to keep the roads safe.
