TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – Three people were killed, and another person suffered life-threatening injuries in a two-vehicle crash connected to street racing in Tucson late Sunday, March 1.
The Tucson Police Department said the driver of a black BMW 750, 20-year-old Ashtyn Vandersloot, and two of his passengers died at the scene — the intersection of Valencia and Country Club.
Employees of I.O. Extracts, right off the intersection, were able to see video from their surveillance camera showing the two cars racing down Valencia before the accident.
You could hear the cars driving before you saw them, and even in slow motion, you could still see how fast they were traveling.
Brittany Sink, director of operations for I.O. Extracts, was the first to see their surveillance video.
“It was crazy, they were going so fast,” Sink said.
The passengers who died were identified as 20-year-old Antonio Olalde and 18-year-old Grace Hobbs. A third passenger in Vandersloot’s vehicle suffered life-threatening injuries, according to the TPD.
The TPD said Vandersloot was likely racing another vehicle when the crash happened, and authorities are asking for help to find the other vehicle, which has not been identified.
“Felt my anxiety go up for sure. It’s definitely, like I said, sad to see,” Sink said. “It’s unfortunate that people are racing and putting other lives in danger.”
According to TPD data, since 2018, more than 20% of crashes in the area involve a speeding driver, more than 75% are intersection-related, and more than 800 collisions happened when a driver was making a left turn.
Carmen Hamilton, C.O.O. of I.O. Extracts, said that with their building being right off of Valencia, they tend to see a lot of street racing-related crashes.
“The people that work around here know that this area is a little bit more known for some of that rowdy type of driving style,” Hamilton said.
The TPD said the driver of the vehicle that was hit by Vandersloot Sunday night suffered minor injuries, remained on scene, and was not impaired.
Detectives said Vandersloot was speeding while headed east on Valencia when he crashed into the silver Buick SUV.
The TPD said video evidence indicated Vandersloot was racing another vehicle at the time of the crash. That vehicle left the area after the accident, and authorities are asking for help to find it.
And Hamilton said that’s something they see all too often.
“It’s insane that drivers flee the scene. All of the time,” Hamilton said. “I think that’s the one thing that has stood out to us from seeing all of the videos that we’ve seen from working on this street side.”
The Tucson Police Department requests help identifying this vehicle and individual. Anyone with information should call 911 or 88-CRIME.
13 News asked TPD if it has any statistics on the number of street racing incidents it has had in the area, and we received the statement below.
“TPD conducted at least four citywide street racing deployments in 2025. Non-citywide street-racing enforcement is typically handled within the division where it is occurring. Citywide street racing deployments are extremely labor-intensive, requiring many officers to work overtime, and can sometimes yield no arrests due to the sporadic and unpredictable nature of street races. Our review of the media releases for fatal vehicle-related crashes in 2025, excessive speed was mentioned in the majority of those crashes.
TPD has provided traffic safety awareness information on social media, including street takeover activities and enforcement, left turn and motorcycle safety, traffic safety tips, impaired driving awareness, crosswalk safety, and so forth. We urge anyone to contact Tucson Police or 88-CRIME if they witness any street racing activities.”
