SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WICS) — As summer begins, Illinois State Police (ISP) is emphasizing the critical importance of motorcycle safety, following a week in which they responded to four motorcycle fatalities. Historically, summer months see the highest number of motorcycle crashes and fatalities, with a National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration (NHTSA) assessment indicating that 47% of motorcycle fatalities from 2013 to 2022 occurred during this period.
Speeding and impaired driving are significant contributors to these incidents. According to NHTSA, 59% of motorcycle fatalities involved impaired driving, while 40% of serious injuries were linked to speeding.
The ISP is reminding motorcyclists to wear helmets and protective gear, such as eye protection, sturdy jackets, pants, boots, and gloves. Riders are also encouraged to make themselves visible by wearing high-visibility colors and retro-reflective materials, and to avoid riding under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
For drivers, the ISP advises vigilance in spotting motorcyclists, particularly in blind spots, and maintaining a safe distance, as motorcycles can slow down by downshifting rather than braking. Motorcyclists may also change positions within their lane to avoid road debris.
The ISP supports new riders in following the IDOT Ride S.M.A.R.T. guidelines, which stress sober riding, offer free license waiver courses for motorcycle endorsements, and highlight the importance of wearing proper safety gear.
