SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Motorcycle safety is a priority for the Utah Highway Patrol after a record year for fatal crashes.
According to UHP, 72 motorcyclists lost their lives in 2025, making it the deadliest year in state history. Officials said more than 75% of those riders did not have a motorcycle endorsement.

Fewer than 10% had even taken a safety course, according to UHP.
“Many of these were preventable deaths, and we hope that with additional education, we will see fewer preventable deaths on Utah roadways,” UHP shared in a social media post.
Lt. Cameron Roden with the Utah Highway Patrol said safety messaging is especially important heading into the busy riding season.
“Now that we’re into riding season, we really want to encourage motorcyclists to be safe out there,” Roden said.
Roden said motorcycles make up only a small percentage of registered vehicles but account for a disproportionately high number of traffic deaths. He also pointed to concerns about training and licensing among riders involved in fatal crashes.
“Safety education plays a huge factor in being safe out there while riding a motorcycle,” Roden said. “Always take that extra second to look twice, check in that mirror, double check.”
