The 8th Annual “Salute to Vets Motorcycle Rally” is set to return to the Kenai Peninsula on July 18 and 19 for a weekend of entertainment, celebration and support of Alaska’s veterans.
The event is organized by Southern Peninsula ABATE (Alaska Bikers Advocating Training and Education), with all funds benefiting local veteran organizations. Last year, more than $10,000 was donated to veteran-focused groups across the state, drawing between 500 and 600 attendees, according to a July 7 press release. Eighty motorcyclists participated in last year’s annual Veterans Awareness Ride.
This year, in addition to the Awareness Ride, the weekend will feature motorcycle games and other activities, including live music, a comedy show, an on-site tattoo parlor, a flag retirement ceremony, and a Quilts of Valor presentation honoring local veterans.
“This rally is about more than motorcycles,” ABATE Secretary Bradyn Holly said in the press release. “It’s about bringing the community together, honoring our veterans, and making a real impact by supporting organizations that serve those who have served us.”
The event will be hosted at The Landing Strip at 39632 Swanson River Road in Sterling and is open to all ages until 9 p.m., after which it is restricted to adults only. Tickets can be purchased online, with weekend and day passes available. The press release notes that the rally is open to all, regardless of whether they ride. Southern Peninsula ABATE, the organizing group, describes itself as “dedicated to motorcycle safety, education, and community service,” and notes that membership is open to all. All proceeds from the event directly benefit local Alaskan veteran organizations.
