OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – A devastating motorcycle crash overnight in Millard has resulted in one fatality and left another person in critical condition, prompting renewed calls for motorcycle safety.

Authorities have confirmed to First Alert 6 that neither the driver nor the passenger were wearing helmets at the time of the collision.

The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.

This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks of motorcycle riding.

UNMC data highlights a significant increase in trauma cases:

  • 110% increase in motorcyclists treated at trauma centers since Nebraska repealed its helmet law.
  • The share of riders not wearing helmets jumped from 20% to 64% in the same period.

UNMC Trauma Surgeon Dr. Reynold Henry emphasized the critical importance of helmet use:

“You just have to think about at 65, 85 miles per hour highway speeds, if you’re not wearing a helmet, your brain is essentially unprotected, your skull is not going to be able to protect the inside. But if you had a helmet, your chances of surviving that kind of accident are significantly higher.”

As the riding season draws to a close, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation offers crucial advice for both riders and drivers:

For Motorcyclists:

  • Be Visible: Wear bright clothing and use your headlights.
  • Dress for Safety: Always wear appropriate gear, including a helmet, eye protection, sturdy jacket, pants, and gloves.

For Drivers:

  • Look Twice: Motorcycles can appear farther away than they are due to their smaller size.
  • Check Before Changing Lanes/Turning: Take an extra moment to look for motorcycles before making any maneuvers at intersections or when changing lanes.

Authorities continue to investigate the Millard crash and will release more details as they become available.
