KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) — Tennessee reported 1,045 traffic deaths in 2025, a 14% drop from the 1,194 deaths reported in 2024, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP).

The Tennessee Fatality Analysis Reporting System from THP shows the significant drop in roadway deaths across the state.

Local driver Madi Kilcrease said the decrease makes her feel safer on the roads.

“It definitely makes me feel safer, especially being a mom to a 16-month-old,” Kilcrease said.

Kristy Liminack, another local driver and mother, said she is relieved by the lower numbers.

“It makes me feel great. My husband works at the lab, and we live in Farragut, so he’s got a pretty decent commute. So, I love knowing that he’s a lot safer on the roads and he’s going to be able to come home to us,” Liminack said.

However, THP said motorcycle crash deaths remain largely unchanged from last year.

Tony Robinson, a rider with 40 years of experience, said both beginner and veteran riders should take a motorcycle course every five years to stay safe.

“For a new rider, take a class. Take a class 100%. If you’re a veteran rider and you haven’t taken a class in a while, take a motorcycle safety course,” Robinson said. “We want everybody to enjoy their ride, and we want to go home to a loved one.”

A list of courses for motorcycle riders is available on the Tennessee State Government website.
