HARRISBURG, Pa. (EYT) — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is inviting residents to share their thoughts on traffic safety and driving behaviors through an online survey available through February 28.

The survey, which can be completed at pa.gov/dotsafety, is voluntary and anonymous. It takes approximately five minutes and includes questions about seat belt use, impaired driving, speeding, distracted driving, and bicycle, pedestrian and motorcycle safety.

PennDOT invests nearly $30 million annually in federal grant funding to support highway safety initiatives statewide. Those funds are used in partnership with education and enforcement programs aimed at preventing crashes, injuries and fatalities.

According to PennDOT, preliminary data for 2025 indicates traffic fatalities have declined for the second consecutive year. In 2024, 1,127 people lost their lives on Pennsylvania highways — the second-lowest total since record keeping began in 1928 and 82 fewer deaths than in 2023. Finalized 2025 data will be released in the spring.

PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll said while the decrease is encouraging, continued public participation is needed to sustain progress.

Survey results help PennDOT evaluate attitudes toward highway safety and adjust programming as needed. Data from a previous survey indicated that many drivers were influenced by family members to make safer choices behind the wheel. That information led to the development of a public awareness campaign encouraging drivers to buckle up and make safe decisions for the sake of loved ones.

The survey will remain open through February 28.
