Days after what would have been Connor Lopez’s 24th birthday, friends and family gathered to honor his memory and keep the young pianist’s legacy alive through a music scholarship. On April 23, Lopez, of Galt, died in a crash on Sheldon Road in Elk Grove after his motorcycle collided with an SUV.The classically trained pianist was remembered for his musical talent, warmth, humor, and kindness. “Connor was the most incredible person,” said his mother, Allyson Lyman.His sister recalled him having “the goofiest mannerisms and he was just so silly and so kind. Usually older brothers kind of roughhouse and bully you in a way and he never did that. He was always so, so kind and always there for me.”Since Lopez’s death, his family has been raising awareness about motorcycle safety, urging drivers to “think before you turn.” Their efforts extend beyond road safety, as they are working to preserve Lopez’s legacy through a music scholarship that reflects his passion and generous spirit.”At first, when we were discussing the scholarship, if it should be possibly a student based on merit or just exceptional like Connor was – he was gifted – or need. And we know Connor would want it to go to a child that wouldn’t have that opportunity otherwise. I think Connor – I know Connor – would be so happy and honored. He was so humble. He would be honored to have a student in his name learn music,” Lyman said.Months after Lopez’s death, his loved ones are still demanding justice. “People should be held accountable when a life is taken and that’s what we’re hoping for Connor. He was so beautiful inside and out. An innocent, kind young man coming home that day.
