GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) – The state of Florida has been dealing with motorcycle crashes in recent years. In an effort to address this growing concern, law enforcement has introduced a program aimed at enhancing rider safety: the SMART course.
Motorcycle crashes are a significant issue in Florida. In 2024 alone, Alachua County recorded 107 crashes and 4 fatalities, while Marion County reported 195 crashes and 13 deaths.
To help stop these incidents, law enforcement agencies have launched the SMART course, designed to equip riders with essential skills for safe riding.
“We have seen a lot of motorcycle deaths and injuries in the state of Florida, and we wanted to do something to reduce those numbers and make Florida a safer place for motorcyclists,” stated Alexander Moore.
Course attendee Ross Lindstrom said, “When you’re on the road in traffic, all this training helps keep you and your bike intact, and hopefully helps you get home safely.”
The SMART course teaches riders how to navigate common and dangerous situations they may encounter on the road. Gainesville police officer Alexander Moore added, “If you don’t know how to manage your motorcycle in varying conditions—such as inclement weather or potholes—this is a safe place to learn those skills. When you’re out riding, those skills will kick in and help you become a safer rider.”
Participants in the SMART course learn valuable skills divided into four key areas:
1. Proper use of the head and eyes while turning for better control.
2. Dipping the bike to transition through curves.
3. Leaning the bike for tighter turns.
4. Mastering the bike in challenging situations.
“Safety is the number one priority. One of the crucial skills emphasized is awareness. I know it’s vital because I’ve experienced situations where it has saved lives. This technique is called ‘brake and escape,’ which simulates a car pulling out in front of you,” said attendee Becky Smith.
The Gainesville Police Department hopes that equipping riders with these skills will help save lives and create a safer riding environment for everyone on the road.
As the SMART course expands throughout the state, local law enforcement agencies are optimistic that increasing awareness and skill development will ultimately lead to fewer accidents and saved lives.
