Fontana Police Department officers will have extra police patrols set up throughout the week to look for violations made by drivers and motorcyclists.
According to authorities, the primary crash factors for motorcycles are driving at unsafe speeds, improper turning, right-of-way violations, driving under the influence and unsafe lane changes. Speeding is the most common factor and accounts for about one third of all crashes in the state of California.
To help keep people safe, police recommended the following tips to keep in mind while driving a car or a motorcycle.
For drivers, always check twice for motorcycles in mirrors and blind spots, use signals when changing lanes, never follow a motorcycle too closely, always maintain a safe distance and when at an intersection, allow for enough space before turning the vehicle.
For motorcyclists, always wear a Department of Transportation-compliant helmet and protective gear, consider adding reflective tape to improve driver visibility and always keep lights on, even during the day. Additional tips include signaling in advance before lane changing, watching for turning vehicles and reducing lane splitting at high speeds in the middle of free-flowing traffic.
Fontana police will also hold additional motorcycle safety enforcement operations throughout the rest of the year.
Funding for this program was provided via a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
