LANSING, Mich. (WILX) -As the days warm up and we get closer to summer, the Lansing Police Department wants you to take notice of motorcycles and bicycles on the road.
The department says it will be monitoring reckless driving to keep those on two wheels safe. So far this year, there have been six motorcycle crashes in the city of Lansing. There are more than 600,000 motorcycles registered in the state of Michigan.
Lansing Police is taking part in the “Look Twice, Save a Life” campaign to increase awareness for other drivers and keep them safe.
Lansing Police say starting today, they will be increasing patrols. And they encourage drivers to slow down and be cautious. Put your phones down and pay attention to what’s going on around you.
According to Michigan Traffic Crash Facts, 84 percent of motorcycle crashes happen on busy streets. Most of those crashes happen when cars are turning left.
Lansing Police urge all drivers to look twice. They also urge motorcyclists to be ready when hitting the roads.
“If it’s been a few months since you’ve been on it, get out there in a parking lot and practice your skills. Instead of trying to multitask on the road and familiarize yourself, familiarize yourself again with the proper turn signals, brakes, get everything checked on your motorcycle and brush up on your skills a little bit,” said LPD Sgt. Randall Hon.
To increase your safety as a driver and motorcyclists’ safety, double-check your blind spots, make complete stops, and use turn signals.
