WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – The Wichita Police Department (WPD) confirmed a 25-year-old man died in a motorcycle crash in east Wichita.
As WPD continues to investigate the incident, the police department is urging all drivers to be aware of their surroundings while driving on the road.
“You want to have your head on a swivel because expect the unexpected,” said WPD.
A local motorcycle safety instructor is echoing the same message.
“The whole thing is that if you can make yourself more visible in traffic, that will keep you safer in traffic as well,” said Mike Vermillion.
Mike Vermillion has been teaching motorcycle safety at Motorcycle Rider Education for almost 20 years. He said safety is more than just putting on a helmet.
“So, main safety tips: stay out of blind spots, wear clothing that’s going to get you seen, don’t ride next to a vehicle for very long, and pay attention to your surroundings,” said Vermillion.
Mike is also wanting to assure people that not all motorcycle riders are dangerous.
“It’s really no different than a car driver that’s driving erratically. You don’t blame all car drivers for that. It’s the one guy. It’s the same thing for motorcycles. It’s the one guy. It’s not everybody. A lot of us pay attention to what we’re doing because we want to get home safe,” said Vermillion.
