FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, and to help promote safe riding, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation partnered with Mathews Harley-Davidson in Fresno to host a free Ride Day event on Sunday, May 18th.
The goal: give first-time riders a safe, accessible way to experience motorcycling while emphasizing the importance of proper training and gear.
Melissa Walter, owner of Mathews Harley-Davidson, says motorcycling offers freedom, adrenaline, and stress relief — but also comes with risks.
That’s why events like these are critical.
“For many people, it’s a sense of freedom,” Walter said.
“But if you can give family members some reassurance that you’ve done everything to be a safer rider, that’s huge.”
Participants were able to use their own bikes or borrow one to learn about essential safety equipment and receive coaching through the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s curriculum.
Walter stresses the importance of investing in a quality helmet and riding gear.
“There are helmets at every price point, but not every company stands behind their products when it counts,” she explained.
In addition to free community events and custom training, Walter offers 24/7 facility access for military members and riders with busy schedules.
She says motorcycle safety benefits not just the riders, but also their families and even insurance companies.
This marked the first time the Ride Day event was held in California, helping break down common barriers like cost, time, and childcare — and giving new riders a safe start on the road.
