ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – As the weather continues warming up, a reminder that more motorcyclists will be on our roads. Officials want to make sure they are safe while riding.
We are only three months into the year, and there have already been four statewide motorcycle fatalities reported compared to just one last year in March.
Alcohol or drug consumption can often be a key factor in motorcycle-involved accidents.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, about one-third of all motorcyclists killed in crashes have alcohol in their systems.
Sgt. Troy Christianson expressed that some riders are making the mistake of getting out on the roads too early in the season.
With some of the uncertain weather conditions we’ve been experiencing, Christianson said that motorcyclists should drive at appropriate speeds according to the weather.
“When we have nice weather, we’re going to see motorcycles out and about. So, it’s important when we start to have consistently nice weather or nice days that other motorists are watching for motorcycles,” he said.
Christianson suggests that riders wait for roadways to be completely cleared of debris, sand, and snow.
He also urges motorcyclists to be on constant alert for road hazards.
“Just make sure you are looking at intersections and double looking…Half of our crashes involve other vehicles with motorcycles.” Christianson explained.
Riders should drive according to their experience level. If you are not comfortable going fast, it’s okay to slow down or avoid highways.
Be sure to wear important safety gear, such as a DOT-approved helmet, a good jacket, gloves, pants, and boots.
