FAIRBORN — Chapter F, Fairborn Eagle Wings motorcyclists group, will meet at the Fairborn Senior Center, 325 N. Third Street, Saturday at 9 a.m.

Deputy Mayor Rodney McCubbins will deliver a proclamation declaring May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. Several motorcyclists adhere to a series of tips and suggestions on various motorcycle websites.

Here are a few suggestions for riders who want to increase their safety and visibility:

• Wear protective gear: A DOT-compliant helmet and brightly colored clothing with reflective tape.

• Ride in the center lane to be more visible to drivers.

• Maintain a safe distance: Allow 3-4 seconds of following distance behind a motorcycle.

• Ride sober and focused: Avoid distractions and impairment.

• Obey traffic laws: Ensure proper licensing and all laws.

• Maintain the motorcycle: Keep it in good working condition.

• Be aware of hazards: Watch for road hazards and dangerous weather.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Safety Administration shares information on its website.

“Sharing the road is definitely everyone’s responsibility. Remember, no one — no driver, no motorcyclist, or pedestrian has sole rights to the road,” said DOS Commander Spenser Moore. “It’s a shared space where we all have rights and responsibilities to keep everyone safe on the road.”
