(WBNG) — May is motorcycle safety awareness month.

Motorcycle riding has gained popularity over the past few years. People like to ride them to explore the outdoors more fun or to save gas, as motorcycles are gas-efficient.

But riding motorcycles comes with risks. A rider coach at the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, Andria Yu, said that since motorcyclists have a smaller profile, sometimes it’s hard to see them.

“Motorcyclists are much a smaller profile; sometimes, it’s hard to see us,” said Yu. “They might be hidden behind cars or other trucks, so make sure you really look for motorcyclists.”

She advises that motorcyclists wear proper gear, such as an armoured jacket and a bright helmet certified by the Department of Transportation.
