As the warmer months approach, the Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) is urging motorists to prioritize motorcycle safety.

In recognition of May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, the MVA, in collaboration with ABATE of Maryland Inc., hosted an event at the Waldorf MVA branch to emphasize the importance of safe driving practices for both motorcyclists and drivers.

Chrissy Nizer, MVA Administrator and Governor Wes Moore’s Highway Safety Representative, highlighted the need for vigilance on the roads. “It’s crucial that all road users stay aware and cautious, especially as motorcyclists return to the roads. Everyone can help to avoid motorcycle tragedies on our roadways by obeying speed limits, driving and riding sober and remaining alert,” said Nizer. “The Waldorf ceremony was a great reminder of the importance of sharing the road and practicing safe driving habits.”

State statistics reveal that nearly 80% of motorcycle-related fatalities occur between May and October, with a significant number of crashes happening between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. More than half of these incidents take place on Fridays and weekends.

The MVA’s month-long campaign includes events aimed at educating both drivers and motorcyclists on road safety.

The campaign also promotes the FAST TRACK program, which expedites the motorcycle licensing process by allowing applicants to complete both the knowledge and riding tests on the same day. This initiative is available throughout May at all full-service branch offices.

Additionally, the Maryland MOTORS program, a collaboration between the MVA, Maryland State Police, and local law enforcement, offers comprehensive skills assessments and safety training for motorcyclists. This program ensures riders are equipped with the necessary skills to stay safe on the road.

The MVA remains committed to providing training courses for new and experienced riders, emphasizing the skills and concentration needed for responsible motorcycle operation.
