EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – After a recent string of fatal crashes, law enforcement officials are reminding everyone about the importance of motorcycle safety.
Stressing riders to always take precautions before hitting the road.
In the last week there have been about five motorcycle crashes reported throughout Western Wisconsin. Wisconsin State Patrol reporting about 33 motorcycle crashes in our region in June.
State Patrol urges motorists to always be alert, which includes keeping an appropriate following distance when behind other vehicles.
Also looking out for animals or pedestrians crossing, avoiding collisions. IN addition, for people driving a car to take a second look when crossing the road or changing lanes. This is to avoid hitting either another car, or someone on a motorcycle. All of these measures are encouraged as these crashes can be fatal.
Sgt. Jonathan Luck with the Wisconsin State Patrol said these are important especially throughout our region.
“We want to make sure we scan the road. Looking for curves, looking for in our region there’s animals on the road. Farm animals, deer, turkeys.” he said. “So you know we want to be aware of just obstructions on the road in front of us.”
Reminding everyone that these regulations are no different than when operating other vehicles.
“Some of the biggest things is really no different than driving a car or truck or any auto. You want to avoid distractions and adhere to all traffic laws, that’s the biggest one.” he said.
As important as it is to be aware of what’s in front of you, Sgt. Luck also mentioned protective gear. Saying although people over the age of 18 aren’t required by law to wear a helmet, they’re highly encouraged along with gloves and high visibility clothing.
