NEWS RELEASE
ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE
*************************
As the weather warms and motorcycle season kicks into high gear the Nottawasaga detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) wants to highlight the need for vigilance and safe riding practices during this year’s Motorcycle Safety Week that runs from May 1 to May 7.
Motorcycle Safety Week is an annual initiative to raise awareness about the importance of safe riding and responsible driving habits. Motorcyclists are significantly more vulnerable in collisions than other motorists, and many motorcycle-related crashes are preventable. Motorcycle safety is a shared responsibility, we’re encouraging riders to stay alert, ride within their limits, and ensure their bikes are in good working condition.
At the same time, drivers must remain aware of motorcycles on the road and respect their right to share it safely.
Motorcycle safety tips for riders:
- Wear all the gear, all the time: Always wear a DOT-approved helmet, protective jacket, gloves, pants, and boots.
- Stay visible: Use reflective gear, keep your headlights on, and avoid riding in blind spots.
- Ride sober and alert: Impaired or distracted riding drastically increases your risk of a crash.
- Perform regular maintenance checks: Ensure brakes, lights, signals, tires, and fluids are in proper working condition.
- Take a safety course: Even experienced riders can benefit from refresher training.
Safety tips for motorists:
- Check your blind spots: Motorcycles can be hard to see; always look twice before changing lanes or turning.
- Give space: Allow extra following distance behind motorcycles. They can stop more quickly than cars.
- Use your signals: Clearly indicate your intentions in advance to help motorcyclists anticipate your actions.
- Respect the lane: Motorcyclists have the same right to a full lane as other vehicles.
Motorcycle Safety Week is a great time to recommit to safer driving habits and to respect all road users. With cooperation and awareness, we can help reduce injuries and fatalities on our roads.
