It’s a rite of spring for seniors at the Block Island School, the presentation to the public of their senior projects, projects that they have been working on for all of the past school year. About 15 years ago the state of Rhode Island passed graduation requirements and doing a senior project was one of the options that local school districts could choose from. Senior projects require a student to pick a subject of interest, do a research paper on it, and complete a “project” of some type that they would then need to present to the public and their teachers.
This year there are nine seniors at the Block Island School and their topics were not only well executed, they were quite varied in the subjects chosen. Attending the presentations, which were held on Tuesday in the cafeteria, is a great way to get to know them. Senior project advisor and high school English teacher Maureen Flaherty told The Times it was also a great opportunity for the students to interact with the public before they go off to college.
