SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) -The Springfield Police Department is offering a one-day advanced driving course for experienced motorcyclists in the area.

The Share the Road course will teach riders techniques, handling, object avoidance, and other skills to help keep riders safe.

The next course offering is Saturday, June 14. However, you must fill out an interest application no later than noon Thursday, June 12.

Trained professionals will be teaching the course. They know firsthand how important these techniques can be.

“We have several motorcycle-qualified traffic officers, so they all assist with it to make those experienced riders just a little bit better,” said Lt. Steve Schwind with Springfield PD. “Hopefully, to reduce the number of motorcycle crashes that we have on a motorcycle. You can see it’s much smaller than a vehicle, and if somebody’s driving and they’re on their cell phone or they’re distracted, they may not see the motorcycle all the time.”

According to Springfield PD, riders must have the following qualifications and equipment before applying:

  • A valid motorcycle endorsement (not a permit)
  • A motorcycle (250cc or greater, no three-wheel variety). All motorcycles must have legal exhaust and legal handlebars (i.e., no “ape hangers”). All motorcycles must be street legal and subject to inspection.
  • Motorcycle insurance
  • A legal, DOT-approved helmet
  • Eye protection
  • Footwear that covers the ankles
  • Proper motorcycle attire
  • Optional equipment – armored or padded motorcycle gear
  • Signed liability waiver

If interested, you must fill out the interest application to be considered. Spots are limited.

If you can’t make the date, Springfield PD will also host this course on Sept. 6 and Oct. 11.
