SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – Springfield police urge motorcycle safety as riding season begins

Law enforcement is asking drivers and motorcyclists to be extra aware on the roads as warmer weather brings more riders out.

Police are also asking residents to avoid pushing grass clippings into the road when mowing lawns. Wet grass clippings create a hazard for motorcycles.

“Be aware of your surroundings and even though you’re on a motorcycle, don’t just assume that other motorcyclists see you,” said Lt. Steve Schwind of the Springfield Police Department. “You’re smaller, less visible on the roadway, so just be aware and expect the unexpected if somebody is driving a vehicle next to you or in front of you.”

The Springfield Police Department is offering its annual free civilian motorcycle safety course. The Share the Road course is for experienced riders to learn advanced riding techniques, object avoidance, and other safety skills. The first course is on Saturday. Riders have until noon Thursday to apply. Additional courses are being offered in May, August, and September. Click here to learn more about the classes and to sign up.
