TEXARKANA, Texas – May is Motorcycle Awareness Month, so the Texarkana police and TxDOT teamed up for the Share the Ride, Look Twice motorcycle safety awareness ride.

It rolled out from the Texarkana Harley-Davidson on Saturday morning to help spread the message.

TxDOT Atlanta District traffic safety specialist Emyli Speer said the event is to remind drivers to look twice at intersections, share the road, and remember that motorcyclists are right out there with them.

“The sun comes out, spring starts, and that’s the time we all want to be outside,” said Speer. “That’s when you are going to see a lot more motorcyclists out on the road; this is a good, friendly reminder and a great way to share the message to share the road.”

Motorcycle police Officer Brent Hobbs reported he had experienced a close call one day. He was pulling over a driver for excessive speeding on New Boston Road, and as he was pulling out, all was clear, but a truck pulled into his path.

His police motorcycle training taught him to take an evasive emergency maneuver. So, he put his brakes into auto-lock and veered to the back of the vehicle, striking it with the front of the bike. Hobbs said he did not have to lay his motorcycle down, but fortunately, he was able to come to a complete stop unharmed.
