LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – TxDOT has launched a motorcycle safety campaign for Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month with a key message: “There’s a life riding on it.”

May is Motorcycle Awareness Month, and a new safety campaign is reminding drivers to share the road and look twice for motorcycles.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), many motorcycle accidents occur when drivers change lanes or make sudden turns without noticing motorcyclists. TxDOT’s “Share the Road: Look Twice for Motorcycles” campaign urges everyone behind the wheel to stay alert because motorcyclists face significantly higher risks in a crash.

Michael Granado, a local motorcycle rider, shared what it’s like riding in Laredo. “It’s like anywhere else, really—it can be dangerous. Depending on the rider, how you ride, and the amount of traffic that’s out there. We try to look out for one another and share ideas to stay visible. Right? Because we know there’s a lot of distractions out there,” he told us.

In 2024, the Laredo District recorded 98 motorcycle crashes, which led to 5 motorcyclist deaths and 15 serious injuries.
