RICHMOND, Va. (WDBJ) – The month of May is Motorcycle Awareness Month; the Virginia State Police is emphasizing motorcycle safety and is offering a course for participating riders with the goal of reducing crash fatalities as the weather starts to warm up.
According to troopers, motorcycle crash fatalities in 2026 are slightly behind the pace of 2024 and 2026; VSP is offering its “Ride 2 Save Lives” motorcycle self-assessment courses across the state.
“Riding a motorcycle in favorable weather can be an exceptionally enjoyable experience, provided both riders and motorists remain attentive and prioritize safety at all times,” said Virginia State Police Captain Brian Olha, who is the State Motorcycle Coordinator.
“Riders must understand their own capabilities on a motorcycle, and all motorists should remain vigilant and aware of motorcycles sharing the roadway.”
In 2026, there have been 24 motorcycle fatalities as of April 30; 19 incidents came in March and April, according to statistics from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
The statistics for the last couple of years included:
- January 1, 2024 to April 30, 2024
- 30 fatalities involving motorcycles.
- January 1, 2025 to April 30, 2025
- 32 fatalities involving motorcycles.
The “Ride 2 Save Lives” self-assessment courses allow current bikers the opportunity to learn valuable safety skills, including:
- How to handle hazards
- How to handle special situations
- How to stay safe on interstate highways
- How to negotiate a curve
- And more
Troopers say the courses conducted by VSP Motors Troopers will be in a safe and controlled environment. Registration can be accessed through this link; space is limited and advanced registration is required.
All participants must satisfy these prerequisites to participate in the program, according to VSP:
- A valid operator’s license with a Class ‘M’ endorsement
- Appropriate riding attire
- A helmet along with eye protection.
- A Motorcycle that’s street legal
