KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – One huge talking point on the WVLT “What’s Driving You Crazy on the Roads?” form during the summer months often pertains to motorcycles.

One Knoxville motorcyclist, Carl Mixon, said motorcycle safety needs to be a top priority.

“As a motorcycle rider, I see people on their phones constantly, talking or texting or even taking pictures. This is a danger to all motorcycle riders as people already do not see us when they are not distracted,” Mixon wrote into WVLT.

WVLT’s Olivia Calfee met up with Mixon to talk about this issue specifically.

“I wish they would just focus on their surroundings and remember that we have loved ones that we want to come home to every night,” said Mixon. “We enjoy the ride, and we want you to share the road with us.”

Mixon said he also added additional lights to his bike with the hope that it would make him more visible, but he said it takes everyone to keep motorcyclists safe.

We also asked Mixon about another common response on the WVLT form which pertains to bikers not driving with respect for others on the road. He said that’s not everyone’s goal when they go for a ride.

“When they drive these crotch rockets like idiots’ zig zagging in and out of traffic, they’re the ones that give us guys that just want to enjoy a ride a bad name, and we are the troublemakers, but we’re not,” he said. “We just want a nice, peaceful ride on a bright, sunny day. We have some of the most beautiful roads in the nation here in East Tennessee.”
